Turkey's Erdogan endorses Finland's NATO bid, but Sweden must wait

By Ece Toksabay and Ceyda Caglayan ANKARA (Reuters) -President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday Turkey s parliament will start ratifying Finland s accession to NATO, lifting the biggest remaining hurdle to enlarging the Western defence alliance as war rages in Ukraine, though he held off approving Sweden s bid. Speaking in Ankara alongside Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinisto, Erdogan said Helsinki had won Turkey s blessing after taking concrete steps to keep its promises to crack down on what Ankara sees as terrorists and to free up defence exports. The three countries signed a deal in Madrid last year laying out steps to overcome Turkey s concerns over accession, but Ankara has said Sweden has not gone far enough. Erdogan spoke by phone with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and said Turkey was determined to continue talks with Sweden, with progress directly related to the concrete steps that it takes, the Turkish presidency said. The parliaments of all 30 NATO members must ratify n ....

Chinese company discusses sending Russia drones, Der Spiegel reports

BERLIN (Reuters) - Russia is in talks with a Chinese manufacturer about buying 100 drones, with a delivery date of April, German magazine Der Spiegel reported on Thursday, without citing specific sources. In recent days, the United States, Germany and other Western countries have warned China not to sell weapons to Russia for its war against Ukraine, saying that any such move would have severe consequences. Russia, hemmed in by severe Western sanctions imposed in response to its attack on Ukraine, is believed to have bought weaponry from Iran and North Korea, including drones from the former, but China has so far stood aside. Der Spiegel said Chinese drone manufacturer Xian Bingo Intelligent Aviation Technology had said it was prepared to make 100 prototypes of its ZT-180 drone, which the magazine said could carry a 35-50kg warhead. I have told China s representatives that it cannot be accepted, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told ZDF public television earlier on Thursday when asked abo ....

Belgian arms trader tangles with minister over tanks for Ukraine

By Andrew Gray TOURNAI, Belgium (Reuters) - Freddy Versluys does not like to be called an arms dealer. But he does have a big warehouse full of second-hand tanks for sale. Standing next to dozens of German-made Leopard 1 tanks and other military vehicles in the chilly warehouse in eastern Belgium, Versluys stressed he is the CEO of two defence companies with a broad range of activities, such as making sensors for spacecraft. But buying and selling weapons is part of his business too. And it’s the tanks that have brought him into the spotlight over the past few days, as he has engaged in a public battle with Belgian Defence Minister Ludivine Dedonder over the possibility of sending them to Ukraine. While other Western nations have pledged in recent weeks to send main battle tanks to help Ukraine repel Russia’s invasion, Belgium has not joined that group, for one reason above all: It doesn’t have any tanks left. It sold the last of them – a batch of 50 – to Versluys’s company ....

Russia claims village on outskirts of Bakhmut in big push in east

By Dan Peleschuk KYIV (Reuters) -Russia claimed on Tuesday to have captured a village just to the north of Bakhmut, a city it is trying to surround in a major push for what would be its biggest battlefield prize in Ukraine since last summer. A Belarusian volunteer fighting for Ukraine told Reuters from inside Bakhmut that Russia was shelling the city constantly and its troops were trying to encircle it. Fighting was under way building by building, the volunteer said. There was no immediate response from Kyiv to Moscow s claim about the village of Blahodatne, and Reuters was not immediately able to verify the situation there. It came three days after the head of Russia s Wagner Group said the mercenary force had seized the village in an attack Kyiv said it had repelled. Blahodatne, which sits on one of the main roads into Bakhmut about 5 km (3 miles) north, was captured with the help of aerial support, Moscow s defence ministry said. Russian forces have made clear, if gradual, advances ....

Russia claims gains in relentless battles in east Ukraine

By Tom Balmforth KYIV, Ukraine (Reuters) - Russian forces claimed incremental gains in eastern Ukraine on Monday adding up to their biggest advances in months, after relentless battles that Kyiv described as human wave attacks which showed Moscow had no regard for the lives of its own men. The administrator of Russian-controlled parts of Donetsk province, Denis Pushilin, claimed troops had secured a foothold in Vuhledar, a coal mining town whose ruins have been a Ukrainian bastion since the outset of the war. A day earlier, the head of Russia s Wagner mercenary force said his fighters had secured Blahodatne, a village just north of Bakhmut, a city that has been the focus of sustained Russian attacks for months. Kyiv said it had repelled assaults on Blahodatne and Vuhledar, and Reuters could not independently verify the situations there. But the locations of the reported fighting indicated clear, though gradual, Russian gains after around two months in which front lines had largely been ....
