Grading the Pack: Bench struggles as Nevada eliminated from Mountain West Tournament

Sherfieldâs 25 points against San Diego State on Friday were a bit misleading. Yes, they certainly look good on the stat sheet but they are empty calorie points just the same. Sherfield had just six points at halftime, all on free throws, after missing all six of his shots in the first half. He then scored 11 points in the last 9:38 as the Pack did little more than keep the score respectable. He missed three straight shots while the Aztecs were building their lead to 60-47 midway through the second half. The Pack point guard was just 6-of-15 from the floor against the Aztecs, padding his numbers at the line (11-of-14). The night before against Boise, though, Sherfield was brilliant, despite turning the ball over five times. He scored just one more point (26) against the Broncos than he did against the Aztecs, but he was much more efficient, draining 8-of-14 shots and making all three of his 3-pointers. ....

Nevada Wolf Pack causes concern against UNLV

Grading the Nevada Wolf Pack’s 89-60 and 72-62 victories over the UNLV Rebels this past Sunday, Tuesday at Lawlor Events Center:

All of the minutes, responsibility and attention he’s getting from opponents might finally be wearing on the Wolf Pack’s 6-foot-2 leader. Sherfield was solid against UNLV but he continued to struggle with his shot, making just 12-of-26. He’s also now just 6-of-27 (22 percent) on threes over his last five games after starting the season 27-of-64 (42 percent) Sherfield also went to the free throw line just six times in the two UNLV games combined. He scored 15 points on Sunday with an eye-opening 11 assists in 33 minutes and then went 6-of-15 from the floor on Tuesday, scoring 18 points with four assists in 39 minutes. Sherfield, though, rarely leaves the floor because he is the team’s stabilizing force, even when he’s not pouring in points. He has turned the ball over just four times over his last ....

Nevada Basketball: Pack top New Mexico 68-54

Despite the contest not being held in the well-known atmosphere, known as “The Pit”, the contest between the Nevada Wolf Pack and the New Mexico Lobos still lived up to the typical 40-minute competitive battle, though the score might reflect it.
Nevada earned the 68-54 victory over the New Mexico Lobos on Thursday in Lubbock, Texas in a hard-fought, gritty battle.
The game was originally scheduled to be played in Albuquerque, but COVID-19 protocols forced a relocation of the contest.
Nevada head coach Steve Alford has now won all three of his matchups against his former program. He was the head coach at New Mexico from 2007-13, winning six championships (four regular season, two conference) in six seasons. ....

Nevada Basketball: Pack roll past Fresno State 79-65

The Nevada Wolf Pack earned the series sweep over the Fresno State Bulldogs Sunday with a 79-65 victory. Nevada has now won eight straight games against its Mountain West foe, dating back to the 2016-17 season.
Fresno State is winless in its four road contests by a combined 74 points. Head coach Justin Hutson has yet to defeat Nevada in five head-to-head matchups the only Mountain West team he has not beaten.
The Wolf Pack advance to 10-5 with a 5-3 Mountain West record. Fresno State drops to 5-5 with a 3-5 conference record. Nevada’s five conference wins have come by a combined 71 points. ....
