(JNS) - A stone bearing a Greek inscription from the end of the Byzantine period was discovered last weekend in the Nitzana National Park in the Negev, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced on Wednesday.
The flat, round stone was used as a tombstone in one of the cemeteries surrounding the ancient settlement, the IAA said.
It was found by Nitzana Educational Village director David Palmach, who came upon it while clearing hiking paths in the park. According to the IAA, Palmach noticed an inscription on the stone, which was later deciphered by Leah Di Segni of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem as referring to Blessed Maria, who lived an immaculate life. ....

‘Blessed Maria’ seems to have died on February 9 of an unspecified year, according to stone found during work to prepare nature paths.

A lady called Maria who lived some 1,400 years ago apparently led such an immaculate life that her loved ones thought it worth mentioning on her tombstone, which was recently discovered at the Nitzana National Park in southern Israel.
The flat round tombstone, measuring 10 inches in diameter, was unearthed by an Israel Nature and Parks Authority worker while clearing nature paths. ....

Inscribed Byzantine Greek Stone Dedicated To Mary Discovered in Israel
An ancient, inscribed Byzantine Greek stone has been discovered in Israel’s Negev desert with a rare Greek dedication to Maria, the Mother of God. The Byzantine Greek stone was found in Israel’s Nitzana National Park, located close to the Egyptian border. The Nitzana area is an important archaeological resource detailing the transitionary period from the Byzantine to the early Islamic period. It was on a hill topped by the towering remains of the ancient Nabatean city of Nitzana, that flourished during the Roman period, that archaeologists discovered the ancient Greek tombstone and the inscription reading, “Blessed Maria, who lived an immaculate life.” ....

Archaeologists have dated the tombstone to the late sixth to early seventh century AD after it was accidentally discovered in Nitzana National Park, southern Israel. An employee of the Israel Parks and Nature Authority spotted the stone when cleaning the park s nature paths. David Palmach, director of the Nitzana Educational Village, noticed the stone bore an inscription, which experts now know was etched in Greek. ....
