live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix5 news. breaking news tonight, an amtrak train plows into members of a legendary bay area band. good evening. i m ken bastida. i m elizabeth cook. that crash happened just after 7:30 tonight at jack london square in oakland. kpix5 s christin ayers is there right now. reporter: yeah, guys, the general manager of the jazz club yoshi s told me it was 10 minute to show time. he says two minutes to show time. he says two members of the tower of power band, the bassist and drummer were rushing across the street and waited for one train to pass and tried to cross, but a second train going the opposite direction hit them. the two were thrown several feet. the manager called 911 and stayed by both men s sides. he said they were both unconscious at the time and appeared to have broken bones. the men were taken to highland hospital and were responsive at that time. we don t know if they didn t hear the train or we don t know how

[ laughter ] it was supposed to be a road trip filled with laughs for two best friends from the way bay area. it turned into a story of survival, filled with immense tragedy. i m eric thomas. we ll get to that story in just a minute. first, breaking news in emeriville. police are investigating a shooting outside of hyatt place hotel. let s get right to sergio quintana. what are you learning? reporter: eric, hyatt place, as you can see, is right behind me. police still have this area cordoned off. what we understand is that there was a shooting that happened in front of that hotel and then at least one of the victims ran from the scene, across the street to the parking lot here at this shopping center. let s go ahead and show you some video we shot earlier from our emeriville bureau camera. in that video, there is a man that is being taken away by paramedics in a stretcher. we understand that is one of the victims. we also understand
