Structural repairs on Penang Bridge to be shortened by a week

“Based on the updated schedule, repair works by TNB and PLUS will now only take 112 days. We shortened the time it took to remove the damaged cable and cable support by seven days, said TNB chief grid officer Datuk Husaini Husin. He said repairs to the 132kV cable that caught fire in KM3.2 of the bridge involved the replacement of three circuit cables with new ones for a length of about 100m. “The repair works will also involve the cable jointing and wooden platform replacements. “These works will not obstruct traffic and will be carried out by sea by using a barge until June 23, he said.

Penang Bridge reopens to traffic heading to mainland after fire causes closure

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Bridge has been reopened to vehicles heading to the mainland after a fire brought traffic to a standstill. Since 6pm Monday (Feb 22), there was massive traffic congestion on the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway heading to the Penang Bridge. The bridge was reopened at around 9.30pm Monday for traffic heading to the mainland. All road users who need to get to the mainland were directed towards the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge instead. According to a Penang Fire and Rescue Department officer, only one lane is currently open for users on the Penang Bridge.
