Gov. says Iron arrested on outstanding warrants, no comment on racial comments allegations towards CO
The Environment Ministry is shedding new light on accusations of racial comments made by a Sask. Conservation Officer towards a First Nations hunter.
Ministry officials confirm that a CO encountered Darcy Iron of the Canoe Lake Cree Nation on Dec. 30, while he was hunting with two children.
“As part of a normal field check, the officer learned that Mr. Iron had outstanding warrants, and that he was prohibited from possessing firearms,” said the Ministry in a statement. “Mr. Iron was subsequently arrested and the firearms were seized, as required by law.” ....

Treaty hunter, FSIN call for change among ranks of conservation officers

Iron also said he inquired about why his guns were being seized and felt uncomfortable with the response he got.
He said he was under the impression that as a treaty hunter, he would not have to obtain his PAL. He said the conservation officer told him he needed to get into the 20th century and obtain the licence.
In an emailed statement, the provincial Ministry of Environment said it would investigate the incident.
The statement did not say if the conservation officer would apologize to Iron. It said the ministry had not received a formal complaint from him about the interaction. ....

Incident involving conservation officer, treaty hunter sparks FSIN concerns of systemic racism

The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous First Nations (FSIN) has stated it’s concerned with ‘systemic racism’ in the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment’s Conservation Field Services. It comes after another reported incident involving a treaty hunter and a Saskatchewan Conservation Officer (CO).
In a media release, the FSIN said Canoe Lake Cree First Nation band member Darcy Iron says he was hunting with his two young children near Humboldt, when he was approached by a CO. The officer checked the weapons belonging to Iron and left the scene shortly after. A few moments after the encounter, Iron and his children began to drive back to the city so the children could use the washroom before they were pulled over by the same officer. Iron’s guns were seized and he was detained in the CO’s vehicle for over an hour while his children were left alone in his vehicle. ....

Canoe Lake Cree hunter alleges CO's made discriminatory comments against him following recent hunting trip

A Canoe Lake Cree Nation hunter is alleging that a Conservation Officer was racially biased against him following a recent hunt.
Darcy Iron said he was hunting near Humboldt with his two children ages 11 and 9 when he was approached by a CO, who checked his firearms and left without further incident.
While returning to Humboldt, he was stopped by the same officer. Iron claims his guns were seized and he was physically detained in the back of the CO’s vehicle for over an hour, while his young children were left alone in his vehicle.
“While I was in his car, the CO said ‘You guys are always driving around shooting out your windows and ruining things for everyone,’” ....
