all day and well into the night. that live look coming to you from san francisco s castro district. good morning. thanks for joining us for this special hour-long edition of nbc bay area news. i m marla tellez. i m jon kelley. good morning, everybody. we start with a historic perspective here. the battle over proposition 8 now nearly five years in the making, prop 8, california s ban on same-sex marriage was first taken to court after the 2008 election. california government officials, who would have normally defended that law declined to do it. that s when supporters of prop 8 then stepped in to defend it. today s decision by the supreme court said those supporters actually had no legal grounds to defend the state s ban on same-sex marriage. this means that the case has been dismissed, essentially, upholding the lower court ruling that originally overturned prop 8. we have you covered on every angle of this historic day, from the bay area to the supreme court. let ....
