I i took his buddy away from him. Me. How does that sit with me. Im chuck todd and joining me for inside analysis this sunday morning are, the New York Times david brooks. Eugene robinson of the washington post. Pauline cooper of the New York Times and jerry sy of the wall street journal. Welcome to sunday. Its meet the press. From nbc news in washington this is meet the press with chuck todd. Good morning. This is the scene outside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston South Carolina this morning where the congregation is gathering for the fis selves since First Service since a gunman murdered nine people there. The victims, reverend clementa pinckney, shah rhonda singleton, Tywanza Sanders with be ethyl lance, reverend Daniel Simmons sr. , depain middletondoctor sue si jackson and cynthia hurd. It brings back other memories notorious incidents. Of course those killing of thee civil rights activists in june in 1964 in mississippi. But in charleston the process o
Black churches served as hush harbors where slaves could worship in safety. Praise houses where their free descendents could gather and shout hallelujah. Rest stops for the weary along the underground railroad. Bunkers for the foot soldiers of the civil rights movement. They have been and continue to be Community Centers where we organize for jobs and justice, places of scholarship and network, places where children are loved and fed and kept out of harms way. And told that they are beautiful and smart. And taught that they matter. Thats what happens in church. Thats what the black church means. Our beating heart, the place where our dignity as a people is embodied. And theres no better example of this tradition than mother emanuel, a church built by blacks seeking liberty, burned to the ground because its founder fought to end slavery only to rise up again, a phoenix from these ashes. [ applause ] when there were laws banning all church gatherers, services happened here anyway in defi
Legislation. I remarked that it was very unlikely that this congress would act. And some reporters i think took this as resignation. I want to be clear. Im not resigned. I have faith we will eventually do the right thing. Every country has violent, hateful or mentally unstable people. Whats different is not every country is awash with easily accessible guns. And so i refuse to act as if this is the new normal. Or to pretend that its simply sufficient to grieve and that any mention of us doing something to stop it is somehow politicizing the problem. Well that was dead right. Anyway, this evening the people of charleston have come together for a vigil honoring the nine victims of wednesday nights massacre at the emanuel african methodist episcopal church. It comes on the same day the shooter was in court for the first time. Dylann roof appeared for a bond hearing. In that hearing we heard very emotional statements from several of the victims families. To you, i forgive you. You took som
A bond hearing for roof is scheduled for 2 00 p. M. Eastern, thats an hour from now. Police say he has been charged with nine counts of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a firearm during a violence crime. Cnns evan perez has learned details about the gun used in the shooting. Law enforcement officials tell him roof purchased the weapon at a charleston gun store in april. Moments ago, the president of the naacp joined others in calling if attack on the church a hate crime. This crime is not merely a crime perpetuated against a church, not merely a crime perpetuated against a pastor not merely a crime perpetuated against noncongregants. It is a hate crime. And as such it is a crime perpetuated against the conscience of the country, the soul of the country and our values collectively as a country. The naacp president cornell brooks will join me live later this hour. Lets get details now on the upcoming bond hearing an hour from now and the gunmans confession to L
Traction today is that matt and sweat could have following old railroad beds from the prison right up through this area. But the man whose wife is charged with helping the killers said she said she was in over her head. He started to threaten with someone inside the facilities was going to do something to me to harm me or kill me or somebody outside the jail if she didnt stay with this. She said matt was giving her attention and stuff and she did not believe that i loved her anymore. She said it went too far. He tried to kiss her a couple times. She said no. And she said thats when he started to threaten her a little bit. Is it your and her contention that he manipulated her to the point where she did the things she did. I believe so. Do you support her . As of right now, i dont know what to think. Lyle mitchell has not been charged with anything and his lawyer says that he is cooperating fully with the investigation. Joyce mitchell has pled not guilty to supplying tools. She has not b
