Early voting for two New York City Council seats begins Saturday for the Bronx s 11th and 15th Council districts with 16 candidates vying for the seat representing the voters in the north and central sections of the borough.
The early voting period phase runs through March 22nd, the day before voters will have the entire day to decide who will represent them in the Council. The contests is also the latest for voters to cast ballots under the new ranked-choice voting system, which was applied to special election races for the 24th and 31st Council Districts in Queens. Results for each race may not come for several days after the election if a candidate does not secure more than 50% of the vote, which would stave off the process of redistributing votes under RCV. ....

Eric Dinowitz Campaign
Of the five candidates vying to come out on top in the Bronx s 11th Council District special election this month, Eric Dinowitz stands the most to gain.
For Dinowitz, a lead contender, his prospect of winning the seat is boosted by local name recognition his father, Jeff Dinowitz, is Assemblymember for the 81st Assembly District. The elder Dinowitz has represented the 81st for more than 20 years and remains active in the local Benjamin Franklin Reform Democratic Club, where Eric is a de facto member given his own post as the 81st Assembly District leader. The two already wield considerable influence in the neighborhood of Riverdale, home to their political base. ....

The New York City Campaign Finance Board released more than $37 million in matching funds to candidates in the races for mayor, comptroller, borough president, and New York City Council to date, representing the largest amount ever doled out in CFB history. Much of that was driven by the sheer number of candidates in these races, with more than 400 people opening campaigns, but also by the CFB’s 8-to-1 matching funds program that stretches funds from small-time donors, weakening the might of political action committees (a.k.a. dark money).
On Tuesday, the CFB met to announce its disbursement of funds at a public meeting after staffers audited financial records they obtained by campaign treasurers for the months of July 2020 to January 2021. While campaigns typically claim to have reached the threshold needed to qualify for the funds, they still must be vetted by CFB auditors to ensure candidates meet the criteria needed to ....

Jewish a capella vocialist running for the NYC Council – The Forward

For Eric Dinowitz, a public-school teacher, father of 5-year-old twins and aspiring politician, one of the challenges living through the COVID-19 pandemic has been the disruption of his musical career.
Dinowitz is a member of Six13, a Jewish all-male a cappella group formed in 2003. In an interview, he said what he has missed most over the last 11 months is frequent visits to the group’s recording studio and “traveling to different communities around the country,” which he described as “quite an experience.”
The group is mostly known for its Passover and Hanukkah parody songs, as well as political parodies. In 2016, it performed a parody of the Hamilton musical at former President Barack Obama’s White House Hanukkah party. ....
