Preliminary results in contests for all five borough presidents and nearly four-dozen New York City Council seats were finally released late Friday night following a two-day delay and counting snafuearlier this week by the New York City Board of Election.
But the latest tabulation did not incorporate absentee ballots, which may once again shift the rankings and final outcome. Most of those races, save for more than a dozen, will be decided through the city s new ranked-choice voting system. Ranked-choice voting advocates, including Councilmember Brad Lander, who is running for comptroller, have pushed the BOE to announce preliminary results to ensure the process was working, even if absentee ballots are not included. ....

Of the five candidates vying to come out on top in the Bronx s 11th Council District special election this month, Eric Dinowitz stands the most to gain.
For Dinowitz, a lead contender, his prospect of winning the seat is boosted by local name recognition his father, Jeff Dinowitz, is Assemblymember for the 81st Assembly District. The elder Dinowitz has represented the 81st for more than 20 years and remains active in the local Benjamin Franklin Reform Democratic Club, where Eric is a de facto member given his own post as the 81st Assembly District leader. The two already wield considerable influence in the neighborhood of Riverdale, home to their political base. ....

Bronx Councilmember Mark Gjonaj Blames "Current Political Climate" For Not Seeking Re-election

Four months before the June primary, Bronx City Councilmember Mark Gjonaj has announced he won t be seeking re-election, citing the political climate that s been critical to his centrist Democratic positions. The decision now paves the way for his challenger to win the primary and ultimately become the Democratic nominee for the November election.
Gjonaj (pronounced jo-nigh) announced his decision Wednesday evening. A realtor who entered public life in 2012 after winning the 82nd Assembly District  becoming the state s first Albanian-American legislator  Gjonaj won the 13th Council District seat in 2017. He currently chairs the Council s Small Business Committee, where he pushed to restrict fees for third-party delivery apps while underscoring the lack of Payche ....
