DNA Vaccine for HIV Moves Forward with Tier-2 Neutralization in Mice

Unlike many other retroviruses, HIV is an enveloped virus, enabling scientists to target the envelope for the induction of neutralizing antibodies in vaccine development efforts. Protein immunizations that induce autologous neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) against difficult to neutralize HIV strains (tier-2) require the stabilization of the HIV envelope into native-like trimer (NLT) conformations. A new study has encoded the HIV NLT into DNA and used this to successfully induce tier-2 nAbs in mice.
