Ludhiana: While the health department and the administration are preparing for the third Covid wave, the police administration is getting lenient with the violators. The shops are opening beyond permissible time, markets are getting crowded and many people are seen violating Covid-appropriate behaviour, but there is no surveillance or enforcement of rules. For the past few days, the Ludhiana police have also stopped lodging FIRs against the violators. A team of the TOI witnessed violations in most parts of the city. As per the guidelines of Ludhiana district administration, all essential and non-essential shops can open from 5am to 7.30pm. After that all eateries can open till 9pm only for home delivery and not for takeaways. The curfew is imposed by 8pm. ....
Ludhiana: The district recorded the highest single-day toll as well as the case count on Sunday, when Covid-19 claimed 22 lives and left 1,729 infected. The second highest case count was logged on May 1, when 1,600 people had tested positive. As per the health department bulletin, 32 deaths were reported in Ludhiana on the day. Of them, 22 patients were of Ludhiana, two of Mohali, and one each of Fatehgarh Sahib, Moga, Bathinda, Ropar Sangrur, Chandigarh, Haryana and Delhi. The district casualties included a 33-year-old man of Haibowal Kalan, a 45-year-old woman of Hussainpura, a 62-year-old woman of Karnail Singh Nagar, a 28-year-old man of Model Town, a 41-year-old man of Shimlapuri, a 29-year-old woman of Kailash Nagar, a 59-year-old woman of Millerganj, a 72-year-old man of Daresi Road, a 55-year-old woman of Dandi Swami Road, a 58-year-old woman of Mall Enclave, and a 55-year-old woman of Prem Nagar.
