The Copperas Cove Arbor Day event will be from 8 to 10 a.m. May 1 at the Copperas Cove Police Department, 302 E. Avenue E. This event will center around a community planting.
The Harker Heights Spring Fest will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 1 at Carl Levin Park, 400 Millers Crossing. This free event will feature family-friendly activities, vendors, artists, and a duck race. Visitors can “adopt” a duck for the race and the participant with the “adopted” duck that wins will get a cash prize. Early voting gets underway Monday for the Harker Heights municipal election, which will take place May 1.
Two seats on the Harker Heights City Council are up for election on the ballot, with two candidates vying for the Place 2 seat and four seeking the Place 5 seat.
In the Place 2 race, incumbent Michael Blomquist faces a challenge from Howard âScotâ Arey.
In Place 5, incumbent Jody Nicholas is term-limited, and four residents are seeking to take her place on the council dais.
The candidates are Vitalis Dubininkas, Sam Halabi, Jeffrey Keith Harris and Stacey L. Wilson.
Here are some brief biographies of the candidates, in alphabetical order, by council race, followed by a question asking each candidate what they see as the top three issues facing the city.
HARKER HEIGHTS â Nineteen residents and three of the candidates running for places on the Harker Heights City Council in the May 1 election gathered Thursday evening at the home of Brenda Johnson, 717 Coyote Circle, for the second Front Yard Forum.
The first forum was held on April 1.
Candidates present Thursday were Vitalis Dubininkas and Stacey Wilson, running for Place 5 and Howard âScotâ Arey, running against Michael Blomquist, the incumbent in Place 2.
Candidates not attending for various reasons were Jeffrey Harris and Sam Halabi, running for Place 5, and Blomquist, who is mayor pro tem.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced several operational changes for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks on Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake.
The changes will take effect March 1.
Cash will no longer be accepted. All park fees, including day passes, boat ramp passes and annual passes, must be payed by debit or credit card only.
Parks with active gate attendant contracts will have manned gatehouses from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
