it s great to have you here. okay. first question is, given what happened when you were in the united states senate with the daca deal, which was that the president sat there and said, you bring me a deal, i m going to sign it, i m not going to say i don t like this, i don t like that, then he ripped it up, can you make a deal with this president, first, as a just broad question? well, i think he wants to make a deal, because there s a couple of things we know he is fixated on. crowd size and his polling numbers. and he knows his polling numbers took a deep dive because of all of the chaos around his shutdown. so i think he wants to avoid another shutdown. so i think he stepped back, and i think mitch mcconnell said, let us get this. i think they re close to a deal. i know they re meeting again tonight. the question is, if the democrats press this issue, which i don t disagree with, we ve got to make sure the messaging is very clear. no one is opposed to putting syria s criminals in
across the border. but these are folks that are in a totally different category than the,hombres. they want to come over and make their case. it s very easy for president trump to say, they re all illegal immigrants, all illegals, but the devil is in the details and they re all asylum seekers. at this moment, beto o rourke is having a counterrally in el paso, where they re putting an anti-wall demonstration together. it s a city that s been extremely opposed on the whole to donald trump s immigration agenda, to his rhetoric about the border. that s true of elected officials there i ve spoken, the current member of congress, beto o rourke, who used to represent, the mayor, and so forth. thank you both, really appreciate it. joining me now, former democratic senator from missouri, claire mccaskill. she is now an nbc news and msnbc political analyst. it s great to have you here. okay. first question is, given what happened when you were in the united states senate with the daca deal, wh
deficit. people think this is how about china and the tariffs? that is a giant deal that is going to affect everyone. so we re off chasing this mouse. donald trump keeps chasing this and he s talking about sending even more troops to the border. he keeps creating a crisis at the border that doesn t exist, michael steele, and yet how does he mack a deal now? when he had the opportunity when the republicans controlled the house and senate to get three times the amount of money for his wall in exchange for a daca deal, that according to reports steve miller and other hardliners vetoed. i think other things came together in the moment for the president and the wall. it really wasn t the kind of priority coming in.
protections in exchange for the democrat s funding his border earlier this month. it was something like three years or so of protections for daca recipients, but no path to citizenship at the time, which the a lot of democrats were not happy about either way. it seems as if, that the shutdown as we know is very much on pause, at least for three weeks or so who knows what will happen now. thank god. thank god for now. but it seems like daca is out of the picture and the democrats don t want to discuss daca in exchange for border wall funding. why is that? they view president trump as an unreliable negotiator. this daca deal has been in the offing for the last year or so. but trump has really never followed up and shown that he was serious about actually doing this. and so, democrats are trying to limit it to a very narrow deal to extend government funding and provide some border security
daca deal. sometimes i really wonder if they re looking out for immigrants. there s a part of me that thinking that the president is looking for a way to not support this deal so he can do the emergency, because he s fearing the base. at least that is the way he tweets. yeah, he is faring the base a bit. do not approve of him at the same rate. i think who he fears most is ann coulter and these are some people he s looking at, trying to figure out how to get back in good grace. you think they will? yes, they will. i don t think ann coulter is as influential as they say. the rubber will meet the road in about 2 1/2 weeks. thank you, guys. eugene, stephanie, alfonso. a quick programming note,
