A seven-member Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT), headed by Ministry of Home Affairs Joint Secretary Sunil Kumar Barnwal, arrived at the Biju Patnaik International Airport on Sunday to make an assessment of damages caused by cyclone Yaas.
The team is scheduled to visit Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Mayurbhanj districts on Monday and Tuesday.
While hundreds of houses are still under water, the storms triggered by the cyclone have inundated ponds and farmlands with saline water, possibly making the land uncultivable for years.
A number of villages in Odisha were gravely impacted by the cyclonic rain, with three villages being completely submerged, The Subarnarekha and Baitrani rivers overflowing and several acres of agricultural land being submerged in floodwater. People living in low-lying areas have been evacuated.
“Depression (remnant of very severe cyclonic storm “Yaas”) over Bihar and adjoining Jharkhand has weakened into a well-marked low pressure area lay over Bihar adjoining East UP at 0530 hrs today,” the IMD said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the impact of Cyclone Yaas at a meeting on Thursday during which he asked the central and states agencies to ensure that normal life is restored in the affected areas at the earliest.
