The Bureau of Meteorology is monitoring a low developing in the Gulf of Carpentaria which could become the fourth cyclone of the season, with forecasters also expecting a mixed bag of rain and heat across Queensland this Australia Day.

The tropical low, which the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) anticipates to intensify into a category 2 cyclone system, is expected to make landfall by Saturday.
