The Tardif Taskforce swept the glamour boy divisions at Cumberland Saturday (July 1), winning both $15,209 divisions of the Maine Sire Stakes for three-year-old colt and gelding pacers.
Opening day at Cumberland Saturday (May 8) enjoyed a large crowd and widespread support from on-track punters, as well as simulcast outlets, for the nine-race card.
The first extended pari-mutuel meeting, to open in over 20 years that was not owned by a casino, enjoyed mild temperatures that brought several hundred people to the Cumberland Fairground’s apron to enjoy a full day of harness racing.
Over nine races, the swiftest of the day went to iconic driver and Maine-native Bruce Ranger, who steered 12-year-old Ira Chief to victory for trainer Dennis Whittemore and owner Diane Whittemore in 1:57.2. Six races went faster than 2:00 and only two races were won by the betting favourites.

The cause of a house fire in the north end is under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshall.
Platoon Chief Phillip Dzouba tells us they arrived at the corner of Beck and Cumberland Saturday night roughly around 7:30.
“It started probably on the main floor, and made its way to the second floor. There were no injuries, there was no one inside at the time that we arrived,” says Dzouba.
The Platoon Chief adds the interior is severely damaged, with no estimate of a dollar figure yet.
Once it was out, he says fire crews spent a bit of time making sure there wasn’t any fire in the walls, because with that kind of older building the fire could’ve spread to the roof and there would be another fire.
