Arts & Extras: Art grows from nature in outdoor sculpture 'Hedgerow'


Floyd County artist Charlie Brouwer works in installing a new outdoor sculpture, “Hedgerow,” at Radford University’s Selu Conservancy.
On a beautiful April morning, one log intended for an art installation proved to be a little too heavy to stay upright. Luckily, no people or pickup trucks were damaged as it toppled.
A few deliveries by horse and cart later, Floyd County artist Charlie Brouwer triumphantly secured a couple of much more cooperative logs in place using a huge zip-tie. Once he was satisfied with the arrangement, he planned to fasten the trees in place permanently with metal fixtures.
“We’ve got four up,” Brouwer said, deadpan. “We’ve only got 40 to go.” ....

It started, as good ideas sometimes do, on a napkin in a coffee shop. Chad Turner wrote his first name down the side of the paper and tried to turn it into an art store acronym. The result: Creative House of Art & Design.

That was two and a half years ago. In November, Turner and his husband, Chuck Beatty, turned the napkin notes into a physical space in Covington. At Creative House of Art & Design, or CHAD, kids and adults can take art classes, and shoppers can buy handmade laser-cut jewelry and coasters featuring pop icons or funny sayings and pick up a monthly art kit to DIY their own masterpieces. Starting next month, customers can even stop by for a drink at the bar. ....

Community: ARTGAWK exhibition to showcase world-renowned artists at RU Art Museum


The Radford University Art Museum is proud to present “ARTGAWK: Choice Pickings from the Radford University Permanent Collection.” The exhibition will be on display beginning Wednesday, Jan. 27, through April 17 at the Art Museum at the Covington Center on the campus.
The exhibit opening will be stretched across three nights to maintain safe social distancing guidelines. Groups of 10 attendees will be allowed into the exhibit for 30-minute sessions to view the artwork on display. The opening dates will take place on Jan. 27, 28 and 29 from 4:30 until 8 p.m. each evening.
The exhibition will highlight significant and interesting works from the university’s extensive art collection, including recent acquisitions that have never before been on public display. The art museum’s permanent collection was founded by acclaimed artist Dorothy Gillespie, whose work will be among other famous artists on display in the exhibit. ....

cutNscratch: Radford grad student sees success in international competitions


A Radford University classical guitar student has had a run of international success. In this COVID-19 era, of course, he did it without leaving Southwest Virginia.
Octávio Deluchi finished with 10 other performers atop the 2020 Ibla Grand Prize competition list. The New York-based IBLA Foundation organizes the event, which for about three decades has been a weeklong, summertime event in southern Italy for top-shelf musicians of all ages, locations and instruments. This year, the Ibla Grand Prize was relegated to the digital world, with winners announced Dec. 31.
The Outstanding Musician recognition, shared equally among the contestants, will eventually lead to a tour in Asia and the United States, at such venues as New York City’s Carnegie Hall and Tokyo, Japan’s Kioi Hall, Deluchi wrote in an email last week. ....
