Suspicious package in Rosemont deemed not dangerous by Montreal police

MONTREAL
A suspicious package that led to a police operation in Montreal on Sunday has been found to be not dangerous, according to police.
The object, which a police spokesperson had said seemed threatening, was located that morning close to a bike path near Carrieres St. and Papineau Ave. in Rosemont.
SPVM spokesperson Veronique Comtois said the package was neither a suitcase nor a box, calling it difficult to describe.
A security perimeter was erected while police investigated.
Comtois said the object did not explode.
An investigation has been opened and police investigators will analyze the package s content.

LGBTQ2S+ asylum seeker in Montreal, said to face nearly 'certain death' in Jordan, to be deported Monday

MONTREAL
A man who walked into Quebec to seek asylum is set to be deported on Monday to what his lawyer calls “just about certain death,” at the hands of his own father.
Samer, a 33-year-old man originally from Jordan, tried to apply for refugee status on the grounds that he’s bisexual.
In a letter his lawyer says was filed at the Immigration and Refugee Board hearing, Samer’s relatives describe how he has “shamed the family,” and detailed how they’ll kill him if he returns home: by burning him or throwing him off a building.
Past similar deaths prove Jordanian authorities won’t intervene, he says. ....

For Montreal's devout, Easter offers a ray of hope after a grim year

MONTREAL
For the second year in a row, it was an Easter marked by COVID-19 restrictions, but Montreal s devout found ways to celebrate and hope for better festive days ahead.
“It s the year of endurance. It s been a long time, many months, a year now,” said Montreal archbishop Christian Lepine. “People are tired, exhausted, so somehow small gestures of hope are important.”
For some, the best sign of hope was the city s warming weather, which allowed outdoor gatherings and celebrations of mass. Others gathered in the city s churches for socially distanced services.
It was a marked difference from last year, when a COVID-19 vaccine seemed far off. Now, Quebecers have received over 1.5 million doses. Hundreds of thousands more are scheduled to be delivered in the coming weeks, but infectious disease expert Matthew Oughton warned that the province isn t in the clear yet. ....

77 per cent of Montrealers over 60 have received COVID vaccine or have an appointment

Vaccination rates are at 59 per cent among Montrealers between 60 and 64, 70 per cent between 65 and 69 and over 81 per cent for those aged 70 and over.
But on Sunday, the mass vaccination site located at the Palais des Congres was quiet. The Clic Sante website indicated appointments were available for that day.
One reason for the quiet vaccination sites is that the province has been routing doses to the province s other regions as part of a bid to help them catch up to Montreal. Health Minister Christian Dube took to Twitter to reiterate the point, saying that 34,000 doses had been redirected to the regions to ensure all Quebecers over the age of 65 are able to get vaccinated by mid-April.  ....
