Sweetwater County Enters into Fire Restrictions

SWEETWATER COUNTY Sweetwater County will be entering into Stage 1 fire restrictions on public and private lands, effective July 9, 2021.
Sweetwater County Fire Warden Mike Bournazian approached the Sweetwater County Commissioners Tuesday to get approval to enter into Stage 1 fire restrictions. The Commission approved the request 4-0.
Despite not personally favoring restricting people’s access to having fires, Bournazian said that the hot weather and dry fuel conditions merited the request.

“It’s not [a request] that I’m happy to bring to you,” Bournazian said. “It is evident that we are at the parameters… that it would be the right thing to do to enter into fire restrictions at Stage 1.” ....

Commissioners Split Vote to Hire 14 Seasonal Firefighters Due to Budget

SWEETWATER COUNTY Sweetwater County Fire Warden Mike Bournazian provided a 2020 fire year briefing to the Sweetwater County Commissioners on Tuesday, and was also approved in a 3-2 vote to hire 14 seasonal firefighters.
Bournazian said the Sweetwater County Fire Department responded to 100 calls in 2020, 50 of which were wildland fires.
The largest fire the department worked on was the Richard Mountain Fire, which was a lightning-caused fire that burned into Utah. The Sweetwater County Fire Department worked on this fire for about five to seven days. While lightning is the biggest threat for fires in the county, Bournazian said human-caused fires went up this year in Sweetwater County. ....
