Lancashire County Council: New leader and deputy for ruling Tory group

Lancashire County Council has a new leader-elect after the ruling Conservative group chose children and schools cabinet member Phillippa Williamson to take on the top job.
She was elevated to the role of county Tory leader on Sunday afternoon, just 24 hours after the party comfortably retained control of the authority in the local elections.

County Cllr Williamson’s official instatement as leader of the council will require a confirmatory vote of all of the authority’s members at a meeting later this month. ....

The capital investments were approved after being put forward by the ruling Conservative group on the authority, as political parties of all colours at County Hall vied for the public’s attention in the final budget before local elections due to take place in May.
The Labour and Liberal Democrat opposition groups each proposed defeated amendments which would have seen household waste recycling centres revert to seven-day operation and longer opening hours – and offered up funding for their own road, flooding and drainage schemes. ....

Lancashire County Council leader Geoff Driver to retire from local politics

Geoff Driver
Lancashire County Council leader Geoff Driver will not be standing at the forthcoming local elections in May, he has confirmed.
The veteran politician – who has led the Conservative group at County Hall since 2008 – said he made the decision at the time of the last county poll four years ago that it would be the last time he would seek re-election.
His departure will bring to an end a lifelong association with local government, dating back almost 60 years – the majority of which was spent in senior officer roles, before he moved into politics at what was then Preston Borough Council in the late 1990s. ....
