Unimaginable devastation in hawaii as we begin to see the magnitude of the damage from Deadly Wildfires that ripped through mauis popular tourist area of lahaina. Most destructive fire appears to be the one burning on the western side, wiping out the town of lahaina. At least six people are dead and emergency officials expect that number to go up. Hawaiis number hawaiis governor did declare a state of emergency and is returning to the islands tonight to address the crisis. People are being told not to fly to maui unless they absolutely have to. The faa is keeping an eye on the smoke because it could alter flight patterns, and we are hearing of some people running to the beach in order to escape the flames. I was the last one off the dock when the fires came through the banyan tree and took everything with it. I just ran south and helped everybody i could along the way. Several streets are still shut down during this investigation. Well go live now to kron 4 Charles Clifford, who is in santa rosa with the latest details here. Charles, walk us through what has happened so far well, right now im standing along todd road just to the west of highway 101 of the Highway Patrol Sonoma County are Sonoma County sheriffs santa rosa pd have this entire area closed down as they investigate this case. Reports of a man brandishing a knife. They try to deal with that situation at that location. But they say the man jumped into a car, took off that resulted in a pursuit. And during the pursuit, they say the man got out fired shots at deputies hitting for them before hopping back into his car. Taking off from the scene. But not before a sheriffs deputies returned fire on him. He ultimately crashed and died. They dont know if he died from gunfire or because he crashed his car and hit say, for example, a poll thats still part of the investigation, whether he was hit or not by the deputies. As pfar as the deputies, we do know that one was hit in the head critical but stable condition. 3 others, one was hit in the hand. 2 others in the leg at this particular point.
