(Hoang Leon Nguyen / The Republican file photo) Facebook Share SPRINGFIELD The City Council on Monday unanimously approved an ordinance designed to ensure city construction projects do not go to companies with a history of underpaying employees. Several councilors who sponsored the ordinance said companies would be barred from such contracts for five years as a result of wage theft violations, such as misclassification of workers, nonpayment of overtime, undercounted hours and withholding of final checks, councilors said in a news release after the vote. ....
The federal funds are expected in the city starting this month with the first $21 million. Another $21 million would be available in May 2022. The City Council and the Board of Estimate & Contract approved the measure in recent weeks to keep the money out of the hands of Comptroller Deborah Reynolds, who they blame for a lack of fiscal transparency, failure to pay vendors and refusal to accept state and federal aid. Lawrence, a former candidate for Congress who headed the city’s charter revision commission last year, is running in the June 22 Democratic primary for comptroller. The others on the ballot are the Rev. Darren Morton, Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard’s chief of staff, and Council President Marcus Griffith. Richard Thomas, the former mayor, is also running but was barred from the ballot due to invalidated nominating signatures. He has until Monday to appeal the decision but has also said he is considering waging a write-in campaign. ....

Also applying for the Ward 1 seat are: Blake Gordon, a former manager of the Tap Sports Bar at MGM Springfield; Democratic campaign volunteer Valerie Gonzalez and Hussein Abdi, a University of Massachusetts Amherst junior majoring in political science and founder of 413Vote. Gumersindo Gomez said in his letter of application that he will not run for the seat in the fall, seeking to step down after serving out the remainder of the term ending Jan. 1. He was the only candidate who made that promise, according to letters made public by the clerk of the board. ....
