Mount Vernon s comptroller is blaming the city s Mayor for the unpaid bills that have led to a state of emergency meaning the city s fire and public works vehicles have been put out of service.
NEW YORK - The streets of Mount Vernon appear to be cleaned up, but the drama is still unfolding. It is a crisis and we’ve been operating in crisis mode probably for the last decade, said Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard.
Mayor Patterson-Howard still says nearly half a million dollars in maintenance bills haven’t been paid because of the city Comptroller.

Shawyn Patterson-Howard said. If she paid the bills on time and regularly collected the taxes that she has been elected to do, then we would not have this kind of cash flow problem in the City of Mount Vernon and interruption of services, she explained.
The issues have been going on for several years, but an inspection on the town s 14 garbage trucks revealed balding tires, which made them unsafe to operate. They found a host of issues when inspecting the town s 19 police cars and singe firetruck. Over the past few years, it s been hard to challenge replacement parts, and because of the lack of cooperation with our comptroller, over the last six months to a year, we haven t been able to get any replacement parts, another town official said, according to

Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard announced on Thursday, July 15 that she has declared a State of Emergency due to internal strife at City Hall as Comptroller Deborah Reynolds allegedly failed to process or pay invoices for hundreds of thousands of dollars for city vehicles.
According to Patterson-Howard, Reynolds has failed to pay approximately $500,000 for critical parts and maintenance of police, fire, and public works vehicles, prompting the declaration of a State of Emergency.
