Developer seeks change in West Springfield parking requirement
Updated 8:20 AM;
WEST SPRINGFIELD To bring tenants back to downtown West Springfield, something’s got to be done about the parking, say the owners the former United Bank building on Elm Street.
It’s not that there isn’t enough parking there are 250 spaces just a short walk away, at the municipal parking lot on Central Street. It’s that West Springfield’s zoning ordinances require a certain number of parking spaces at each individual property, and the dense retail and office buildings on Elm Street don’t have enough room or street frontage to satisfy the law. That saddles potential developers with the delay, expense and uncertainty of applying for a special permit.
Digital billboard zone proposed along Route 5, I-91 in West Springfield
Updated Feb 17, 2021;
WEST SPRINGFIELD Advertising may be taking to the skies above Route 5 if town councilors support a petitioned zone change.
William Fennell, an attorney representing 19 petitioners from West Springfield, spoke at Tuesday’s council meeting about their proposal for an overlay zone to allow digital billboards in the retail district of Riverdale Street (Route 5) and on industrial land facing Interstate 91 near the Holyoke city line.
A separate group of 13 residents sent a letter in opposition. Town councilors seemed receptive to the proposal, but wanted to make sure Riverdale Street isn’t overwhelmed by flashing advertisements.
West Springfield council eyes another alternative to mayor’s racism order
Updated Feb 01, 2021;
West Springfield town councilors will take up the issue of racism at their next meeting, and this time they’ll have another competing resolution to consider.
Following a Jan. 25 discussion that failed to reach a consensus on changing any of the wording in Mayor William Reichelt’s executive order declaring racism an “emergency and public health crisis,” Councilor Michael Eger last week shared his own version of the order, suggesting a few changes.
The council was slated to vote on the executive order Monday, but the meeting was canceled because of inclement weather.
