West Springfield quarantines 4 kindergarten classes

WEST SPRINGFIELD Four classes at John Ashley Kindergarten are in quarantine this week after a one pupil in each room tested positive for COVID-19.
At a public meeting on Tuesday, Mayor William Reichelt and School Committee member Kathy Alevras questioned whether it was “overkill” to send four whole classrooms home to learn remotely. School and health officials, however, said it’s hard for kindergartners to maintain social distancing during class, at recess and on the bus, and the state’s public health protocols mandate quarantines for any close contacts of an infected person.
West Springfield council eyes another alternative to mayor’s racism order

West Springfield town councilors will take up the issue of racism at their next meeting, and this time they’ll have another competing resolution to consider.
Following a Jan. 25 discussion that failed to reach a consensus on changing any of the wording in Mayor William Reichelt’s executive order declaring racism an “emergency and public health crisis,” Councilor Michael Eger last week shared his own version of the order, suggesting a few changes.
The council was slated to vote on the executive order Monday, but the meeting was canceled because of inclement weather.
