A Williamsport district judge allowed a continuance Friday of a preliminary hearing for a city woman charged in the death of her five-month-old daughter and stabbing of her estranged boyfriend.
District Judge Aaron S. Biichle permitted a motion for continuance that was filed by Andrea Pulizzi, the defense attorney for Corrie Shanikah Cowlay-Saunders, 22, of 344 Adams St.
The defense continuance motion was not approved by county First Assistant District Attorney Martin Wade or District Attorney Ryan Gardner, but nonetheless was granted to give Cowlay-Saunders’ lawyer more time to prepare for the preliminary hearing.
“Sorry,” Wade told reporters and family members as they left the courtroom without any witnesses testifying or evidence presented.
Cordell Faltz, her daughter’s father.
The couple broke up last year, so when Faltz woke up to Cowlay-Saunders standing in his bedroom, he asked her to leave, but she refused.
After Faltz escorted her out of his bedroom into another, Cowlay-Saunders stabbed him in the neck and behind the ear. She then ran out of the house and stole his car. While fighting to stay conscious, Faltz was able to dial 911.
Cowlay-Saunders crashed the vehicle near the city’s intersection of Railway Street and Maxwell Place. When authorities arrived at the scene, she confessed that her baby,
Cailania Faltz, was dead.
