The novel coronavirus responsible for COVID-19 could become little more than a nuisance, causing no more than common cold-like coughs and sniffles within the next decade, say researchers.
The team, including Fred Adler from the University of Utah, said this possible future is predicted by mathematical models that incorporate lessons learned from the current pandemic on how our body s immunity changes over time.
Over the next decade, the severity of COVID-19 may decrease as populations collectively develop immunity, Adler said. The findings, published in the journal Viruses, suggest that changes in the disease could be driven by adaptations of our immune response rather than by ....

Japan universities develop speedier analysis of coronavirus mutations

Japan universities develop speedier analysis of coronavirus mutations
Osaka University and Hokkaido University in Japan have developed a system capable of analyzing genetic mutations of the novel coronavirus much quicker than conventional methods.
Researchers say they hope the system will expedite the development of novel therapeutics and preventative measures for COVID-19. The virus has claimed more than 3.10 million lives worldwide as of late April, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Using the polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, a technique to amplify small segments of DNA, the researchers succeeded in establishing a simple and efficient way to generate infectious clones of SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, for analysis. ....

Explainer: What are mutations of coronavirus, and how are they spreading?

With more than 12,700 identified mutations now, the deadly coronavirus is becoming powerful and more contagious
COVID-19 is no longer the same virus that we first saw in 2020. It has changed and has become more powerful it has mutated. It began with one but it has more than 12,700 identified mutations now.
When a virus replicates, it sometimes changes shape in the process. Such behaviour is quite normal for a virus as a virus by definition is always looking for ways to spread and thrive.
When a virus mutates more than once, the mutation is called a variant of the original virus. Most of these variants are harmless but in the case of the coronavirus, some variants are now driving a worldwide surge in cases. ....
