Step forward for Cornish geothermal rum distillery project

Proposals for a geothermal rum distillery and cask maturation research facility directly connected into a geothermal power plant have moved forward with outline planning permission granted by Cornwall Council.
Planning permission, subject to conditions, has been granted for Celsius – the Sustainable Distillery Research Centre – to be built on the hard edge of the former United Downs landfill site, adjacent to where Geothermal Energy Ltd (GEL) will be producing zero carbon, renewable power in 2022.
Waste heat from GEL s deep geothermal energy plant will be piped directly into the Celsius centre, where its temperature will be boosted using heat pump technology being developed by the Cornish Geothermal Distillery Company(CGDC) and engineers Buro Happold. ....

A project to build a sustainable distillery research centre on the edge of former landfill site in Cornwall has been granted outline planning permission.
The team behind the green scheme to build the UK’s first geothermal rum distillery and cask maturation research facility directly connected into the first deep geothermal power plant are celebrating the decision by Cornwall Council.

Entrepreneur Matthew Clifford has received planning approval to build a new carbon-neutral rum distillery in Cornwall, UK, which will be powered by geothermal energy.
The site is thought to be the UK’s first geothermal-powered rum distillery
Former offshore helicopter pilot Clifford is the founder of the Cornish Geothermal Distillery Company (CGDC). In November 2020, he submitted plans to the Cornwall Council for a new 100% sustainable rum cask maturation facility, visitor centre, cooperage and geothermal energy centre.
The site is thought to be the UK’s first geothermal-powered rum distillery. ....
