In context: Corellium s co-founders were early pioneers in the jailbreaking scene. At a Black Hat conference last year, Corellium reps praised the software s ability to offer iOS replicas to anyone, including foreign governments and commercial enterprises. Apple filed suit in August 2019, asking for the destruction of all infringing code and cash compensation.
On Tuesday, a US District Court in Fort Lauderdale shot down Apple s copyright claim against security software startup Corellium. The Cupertino tech giant took on the smaller company last year, filing a lawsuit alleging that it violated copyright law in creating an iOS virtualization system used to find security bugs in Apple s mobile operating system. ....

Apple loses lawsuit alleging iOS copyright infringement

Apple Inc. has lost a lawsuit against a company called Corellium LLC, which has built a virtualized version of the iOS operating system for security testing purposes
Corellium was co-founded in 2017 by husband and wife Chris Wade and Amanda Gorton. Its software quickly became popular because it enables security researchers to run a virtual iPhone environment on a desktop computer. That made it possible for people to test iOS security and find flaws and bugs without buying an iPhone or iPad.
But Apple wasn’t impressed. It sued Corellium last year alleging that the company had infringed on its copyright by replicating iOS. ....

Apple's lawsuit against Corellium has been partly thrown out

Back in August of last year Apple filed a lawsuit against the virtualization software company Corellium, arguing that the product infringed its copyright and later adding claims that Corellium's product violates the DMCA. While the DMCA claims will still need to be settled in court, a judge in Florida has tossed out Apple's copyright claims. To over simplify it, Corellium allows security researchers to spin up a virtualized ARM device (including iOS devices) in a browser and take a deep look under the hood to discover potential security bugs. ....

Ruling on a motion for summary judgement, a federal judge in Florida has partially thrown out a lawsuit filed by Apple against security startup Corellium.
Apple had filed a lawsuit against Corellium in August 2019 claiming that the latter had violated its copyright. The following January, Apple also added charges that the startup had violated the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA), the Washington Post reported.
While the judge deferred ruling on the DMCA charge, the copyright claims have been thrown out on the basis of fair use.
As explained by TechCrunch, Corellium is a platform that enables security researchers to create a virtual, simulated ARM device including iOS devices in a browser. They can then use the simulated device to research and discover potential security bugs. ....

Apple sued security start-up Corellium last year, accusing it of violating copyright law for offering researchers access to “virtual” iPhones that can help them find bugs in iOS products. Now, a federal judge in Florida has tossed Apple’s copyright complaint, giving Corellium a major victory in its legal battle against the tech giant. Apple also accused Corellium of violating the Digital Millennium Copyright Act for allegedly bypassing its security measures to create its iPhone emulator. That complaint has yet to be addressed by court.
Corellium’s software allows security experts to run virtual iPhones on a browser on their computer. It gives them deeper access to iOS even without a physical iPhone installed with special software. As ....
