People here have been lined up for hours, some of these folks sleeping in their cars waiting for the curfew in the town of lahaina to expire. Some of these people have nothing left, they just want to get in, see whats left of the town. Take a listen to some folks about what theyve seen there. I want people to know that there are people out here suffering, and we need donations. We need, we need people shipping things out here. We need families fed, we need yeah, we need so much men help. Reporter home after home in lahaina, gone. One estimate from core logic puts the estimate of destroyed homes at more than 3,000. The rising death toll now at 80 people as rescue crews search for more victims. Thousands of people have now left the island, and around 1400 are currently staying in Emergency Shelters here. south carolina continue to recovery from rains wind and cataclysmic flooding. ian slammed into south carolina just shy of category 5. the current death toll of at least 45 people likely to come in the days as search and rescue cruise go through blocked floodwaters, as of this morning, 1.3 million homes and businesses still in the dark. according to the latest estimate ian may have caused as much as $47 billion in insured losses which could make it the most expensive storm in the state history. the figure comes from core logic, that s a research firm that estimates losses from natural disasters. the estimates, combined ensured losses through private insurance, which typically covers wind damage. and fema s national flood insurance program that covers water damage. their estimates as of thursday, wind damage, $20 billion to $32 billion. flood damage, $6 billion to $16 billion. so the low end of the combined estimate would be $28 billion. before we spend, let s ask ourselves, is
we re going to take you to one of the hardest-hit areas where almost an entire island was decimated. and her rescue during the hurricane made headlines. a nurse desperately trying to get to work was caught in the rising floodwaters. thankfully a nearby reporter was there, saved her and saw her. and that is my guest tonight. good evening, i m erin burnett. out front tonight, ian s fury still remains an extremely dangerous storm making its way through the carolinas tonight. let me show you this powerful video showing a pier in north myrtle beach torn into pieces as the hurricane came ashore. the storm surge ripping through neighborhoods like the ones i m showing you here, leaving even more destruction of homes in its wake. even these homes built up on sticks. so many of them deeply damaged. and parts of charleston s historic downtown also underwater. and tonight there is still concern for life-threatening floods as the storm could dump up to 12 inches of rain as it moves no
everywhere. i ve never seen damage like this in my whole life. it s unreal. reporter: boats tossed like toys. the lone bridge connecting the island cracked and crumbled with the storm s winds putting some sections totally under water. we had about 200 households that didn t evacuate on the island that we know of. reporter: anyone still trapped on the isolated island now waiting for rescue by boat or air. we joined the lee county sheriff as he surveyed some of the hardest hit areas to see the full scope of ian s power. you know that as we are speaking right now, there are people that want us and need us and we can t get to them. reporter: people like jack and betty. an elderly couple who hasn t been heard from since the storm hit their continue dope. the worst part is the waiting and the unknown and not knowing that they re okay. reporter: their son scott says his parents were unable to evacuate in time and forced to hunker down on their ground floor. but rescuer

This storm has strengthened dramatically. Its really caught a lot of people here by surprise. Some of the people originally planning on riding it out decided at the last minute to make their evacuation. Still the worst is yet to come in the next four to five hours. We have already heard from local police who have said that fo
