fear of ours after 9/11 that there would be copycat attacks. there s a lot of similarities between this and what happened in monterey park and i m sure they ll look at all these components so they can get the evidence before the judge that s necessary. and, captain johnson, same question to you in terms of what jumped out. a few details they believe the shooter did target his victims. they have a semiautomatic handgun they say was legally purchased that they have and the suspect was seen in his car parked right near a police substation and said he did not surrender but was parked is there, authorities recognized the vehicle and then took in the apprehension. what are your big questions now? what do you need answered? we need answered did he have any criminal history? had there been anything going on at the workplace that he visited and so some of those things are questions we re going to have to know and like the other presenter just talked about, there s a lot of layers that are h
threat upcoming to the midterm elections here in the united states, specifically warning, and i m quoting now, of lone offenders who leverage election related issues to justify violence. how concerned are you, mr. secretary, about the threat of copycat attacks? let me say, wolf, that domestic violent extremism is a terrorism related threat to the the homeland that we have been tracking now for a considerable amount of time. it s one of the greatest terrorism related threats we face in the homeland. so domestic violent extremism, these extremists, they re terrorists? we use the term interchangeably, but domestic terrorism has specific legal implications for particular proceedings in a court of law. so we use the term domestic violent extremism. it s a real threat. we have confidence in the elections, in our midterm elections, their integrity.
we ve been working very, very closely with election officials, state and local, around the country. so we have confidence in the integrity of those elections and it is fundamentally important that people exercise their right to vote. that is the foundation of our democracy. so are you waorried about these copycat attacks? we track the threat environment and push that information out to state, local, tribal, territorial law enforcement, so that they re aware of the threat and alert to it. that s what we do. and this product that we issued on the 28th of october was certainly not our first with respect to the threat of domestic violent extremism. we have produced more than 100 products over the last 20 months addressing this and other threats to the homeland. in the bulletin that you released the other day, together with the fbi, u.s. capitol police, you warned that potential targets include, and i m quoting, candidates running for public office, elected officials, election workers
violent extreme if you re unhappy. yeah. and that s the thing that i think really is what we re grappling with. you started the show out with the department of homeland security saying that increasingly people are going to try to solve their own personal problems or what they perceive to be problems in the world with violence. for me, january 6th was an attack on my workplace. i was covering the capitol. i was there and it was one of these things that was just incredibly unsettling not just for all of the public and critically important democratic-related issues, but because it was a demonstration of a deep insecurity in my personal sphere, in my personal world. and there are more and more americans who are starting to experience that, and the more instances we see that are publicized and become these huge things, the more there are copycat attacks. there are other people who think this is how we re supposed to solve our problems, and you combine that with the fact that are fewer a
