Airlines in sioux city. they were only able to change direction by one engines against the other. they had extra pilots who were dead heading and they saved that flight by doing that. this is starting to sound like a controllability issue, a steering issue based on the most recent information that you put up. peter, do you agree? i think, yeah, at this point the two accidents mary mentioned are really extraordinary events but, you know every accident is so rare these days that they tend to be one off. geez we haven t seen that before. this is pretty mysterious. you wonder whether there was something in flight that developed on a gradual basis and quickly overcame the pilots. there is a question if they had an issue why they didn t divert earlier. these are all questions that are going to be answered in the next week or ten days. ....
Charles barnett is a boeing 777 pilot. chuck, let me start with you. this report from the new york times that the plane was going at 45,000, then down to 23,000, then back up to 30,000. would that be auto pilot or would a pilot have to be in control of those kinds of erratic maneuvers? well, thanks for having me, wolf. i think that suggests that an airplane likely out of control. going up to 45,000 feet is almost 2,000 feet above the surface ceiling of the airplane. the airplane wouldn t want to do that even with a pilot trying to suggest that it go up, with the pilot trying to control the plane to tgo up there. it does suggest a controllability issue. that someone was in control if you re going from 45 to 23 back up to 30, it s not auto pilot, right? it would not be auto pilot. and i m not sure a pilot could make the airplane do that ....
Tower that they have fire. so they go, i have a fire in the number two engine. but the situation is not what the pilots suspect. desperately trying to get enough speed to get airborne, they try to pull up the landing gear. it wouldn t come up because the left side was damaged by the fire. they are not in a position to continue level flight, and at that point they realized they needed on the ground at the closest airport. it wasn t a good choice, but it the best choice that they had. you have a fire and it s not just contained to the engine. it s now encompassed. almost the full bottom of the left wing. it was a plane trying to survive. seconds later, engine number one fails. the concorde s chances of making the airfield rapidly diminish. you have two engines trying to do the work of four. an airplane wallowing in the air because it hasn t built up sufficient flying speed and now you have a controllability issue. and you have an airplane that s on fire. the plane became ....
