Greenville leaders gather to educate community on Tulsa Race Massacre

Nearly 100 people in Greenville helped commemorate the 100th anniversary of a Black community wiped away by racial violence.
The Tulsa Race Massacre happened on May 31, 1921 in the Greenwood district of Tulsa Oklahoma.
The Community Remembrance Project of Greenville County (CRP) hosted a Centennial Commemoration of the massacre Monday outside of the Phillis Wheatley Community Center in Greenville.
We know we ve got to tell this story because this is neither the first or the last incident where Black bodies were massacred in the name of racism and white supremacy, said Jalen Elrod, chair of CRP s research committee. We ve seen this happen in Orlando, in Tulsa, in Orangeburg, and in Charleston almost six years ago. ....

The history of lynching victims in Greenville s past was brought to light each Monday in February, in observance of Black History Month.
These stories were aided from the research and documentation of the Community Remembrance Project of Greenville County (CRP).
The CRP, in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), is working to memorialize documented victims of racial violence and foster meaningful dialogue about race and justice.
EJI traced four of the state s 189 documented lynching victims to Greenville County. ....

The history of lynching Black people in Greenville, South Carolina


In late summer 1899, somewhere near Travelers Rest, Tom Keith drew his last breath.
An online database lists Keith among the lynching victims of 1860-1950, and cites the method of his death as riddled by bullets.
Robert Williams kidnapped and murdered in 1881
White residents of Greenville and Anderson counties participated in the 1881 kidnap and murder of a Black man.
That man was Robert Williams. He was a husband and a father of two children. He was also accused of assaulting a white woman.
Ira Johnson hung from a tree in 1895
Ira Johnson s lifeless body was found by a child, hanging from a tree in Greenville s San Souci during an early morning in July 1895, according to the Community Remembrance Project of Greenville County. ....
