Unknown Heroes: Black History Month profile of Rosenwald Schools

Editor s Note: During the month of February commemorating Black History Month, The Columbia Daily Herald will partner with the Maury County Archives and county historian Jo Ann McClellan to feature African Americans, who have made an impact on Columbia and Maury County, past and present. In the Unsung Heroes  series, look for profiles of the African American doctors, educators, business owners, artists and other community leaders who have helped shape Columbia into the community it is today. 
In July 2020, the Canaan Rosenwald School, one of Maury County’s treasures was lost when it was destroyed by fire. The Canaan School was one of five Rosenwald Schools, which opened in the 1928-29 school year for African Americans. ....

 Fred W. Campbell Jr. gained his heavenly wings at Tennova Healthcare on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2020.
Affectionately known as Butter Cup, he was 85 years of age, born July 15, 1935, in Cleveland to the late Lola and Fred Campbell Sr.
He was preceded in death by his late parents; his mother and father-in-law, Prudy and Ed Johnson; granddaughter, Crystal Stovall-Kinamore; and brother-in-law, Allen Dog Johnson.
Fred Butter Cup was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he was baptized at an early age. He was a member of the male chorus and was a faithful member of Wednesday night Bible Study. He enjoyed visiting other community churches and later became a member of Green Chapel Church in Charleston, Tn. He was a graduate of College Hill School and he retired from Bowater Paper Mill after ....
