Sigfox brings in Google Cloud for next stage of IoT journey

The last few years have proved tough for Internet of Things (IoT) specialist Sigfox as it became mired in turmoil, intrigue and uncertainty about its very survival.
After becoming virtually a household name following its establishment in 2010, recent years have been marked by an exodus of top executives and job cuts. According to a report in Les Echos in September 2020, the company said it would cut 47 of 400 jobs.
At the time, CEO Ludovic Le Moan told the French broadsheet that 2020 was proving to be a complicated year, not least owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The company has previously targeted 1 billion connected devices by 2023, but is still a long way from achieving that goal with only 17 million devices connected thus far. ....

5G overshadows wireless operators' IoT businesses

Just a few years ago, it was difficult to get a mobile operator to talk about anything other than their Internet of Things (IoT) business. From connected cars to smart cities, connected health to smart utilities, nearly every Tier 1 operator was ready to talk about their IoT ecosystem and their plans for creating products and services for every vertical market.
Fast forward to today and it appears that IoT has taken the backseat to 5G. Mobile operators only want to talk about their 5G network coverage and capabilities. IoT is rarely mentioned in press releases or investor calls.
IoT isn t sexy and they [operators] have better things to talk about, said analyst Roger Entner of Recon Analytics. Right now, the market is settled, not matured but settled. ....

Harmonic 'CableOS' rollouts rise to 44 customers, 2.6M cable modems

Harmonic made more progress with CableOS, its virtualized access network platform for both hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) and fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) networks, in Q4 2020. But the overall deployment still represents a small fraction of the modems served by those customers.
Harmonic said its cloud native CableOS product was deployed commercially with 44 customers at the end of Q4 2020, up 91% versus the year-ago period, with six more coming on board since the end of Q3 2020. Those deployments covered 2.6 million served cable modems, up roughly 500,000 from the 2.1 million served at the end of Q3 2020.
Deployments of CableOS are expanding, but the current crop represents just 5% of the 50 million-plus modems served by Harmonic s early CableOS customers. ....
