Redbridge Council donated the planters for Clore Tikva School to place between the road and the footpath children will use - Credit: Clore Tikva School A school in Barkingside is using large flower planters to create a protective barrier between the road and pavement now that children have returned to class. The changes in drop-off and pick-up routines for parents because of social distancing measures has meant that Clore Tikva School has had to review its security safeguarding measures. Redbridge Council donated the planters. Louse Dorling, chair of governors at the school in Fullwell Avenue, said: We have been working so hard to ensure we can keep the children and the community safe when in and around our school facilities. ....
Boris Johnson on his bike in archived photographs - Credit: PA Boris Johnson has been told to avoid future trips to exercise at the Olympic Park, after his controversial cycling excursion last weekend. Pressure has been mounting on Downing Street to own up to the facts surrounding the visit to Stratford last Sunday afternoon. Government guidelines state people must “stay local” when exercising during lockdown, prompting Newham politicians to criticise the Prime Minister for his seven-mile journey. Labour Councillor Joshua Garfield, who represents the Stratford and New Town ward including the Olympic Park, branded the trip “unnecessary”. He said: “One in thirty Newham residents is currently infected with coronavirus and advice from the government is to stay home and stay local when exercising or shopping for essentials. ....
“I have been a member of these voluntary organisations in the past and every penny does count.” Cllr Helen Coomb, the cabinet member for transformation and engagement, agreed the sector has done “an enormous amount of good” and that it was a “difficult decision”. However, she argued other sources of financial support set up this year, such as the Local Lottery, would mitigate the effect, which satisfied Cllr Garfield. However, the majority of the strategy and resources scrutiny committee voted to recommend the cabinet reconsider the proposed cut. At the cabinet meeting on December 15, Cllr Howard Berlin (Con, Fairlop) asked the cabinet to respond by removing this saving from the budget proposals. ....
The council still has £19m more worth of savings to make Redbridge councillors from both parties are asking the cabinet to reconsider plans to cut £40,000 worth of support for the voluntary sector out of next year’s budget. The council predicts a £83 million budget gap by 2025 and needs to make more than £25 million in savings in next year’s budget alone. At a cabinet meeting held on December 15, deputy leader Cllr Kam Rai said the council has identified some possible savings, which it will now consult on, but has “£19 million more to find”. Councillors from both parties objected to plans to get rid of the Social Action Fund, a grant scheme set up this year to support groups helping those affected by the pandemic. ....
The town hall is set to introduce emissions based parking charges. - Credit: PA Archive/PA Images The town hall has been urged not to break a promise by charging people for their first parking permit. Councillors were urged to reconsider Newham s plan to introduce an emissions based charge at a council meeting on Monday, December 14. Resident Liam Adam said: One argument made about [the council s] new tax is that every other borough has a similar charge. The main problem: the other boroughs didn t make a promise to residents that the first car permit would always be free. You can all pretend that was a previous council, but the vast majority of Newham residents, who own a car, don t see it that way. ....
