We need innovative people with 21st century thinking

Nancy Dervin
My last letter to the editor will no doubt garner several rebuttals ( Spoken like a true lawyer, May 13). I expect they will mostly be various versions of Mary Koberstein and Alan Galbraith s letter which, when distilled, is simply another pitch for a hotel on our Adams Street property. Theirs is the letter I would like to respond to ( The way forward for housing and financial stability, May 20).
They take issue with Measure G stating the vote was “no slam dunk and five hundred voters did not even weigh in.” Correct. But 3,058 or 91.54% of voters did. That is a huge voter turnout by any standard. Although the margin was small the majority did vote No Hotel on Adams Street. Just like we did at a Town Hall five years ago, and we will again. ....

Mary Koberstein and Alan Galbraith
Last week, Nancy Dervin attacked Paul Dohring (“Spoken like a true lawyer,” May 13). Nancy says Paul is “myopic,” has “tunnel vision” and “should be ashamed of himself.” Why? Because he values a comprehensive approach and knows it takes a realistic financing plan to turn visions into reality?
Nancy says Paul and his “hotel-pushing comrades” should get over the idea of a hotel on Adams because last November’s vote put that matter to rest. Really? That was an advisory – not binding – measure. The actual vote was no slam dunk. Five hundred voters did not even weigh in. ....

El Cajon mayor, councilman look to oust Planning Commissioner

EL CAJON
El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells and City Councilman Gary Kendrick want to remove Planning Commissioner Humbert Cabrera, alleging he has been rude to applicants and failed to remain impartial. They also contend he has not been honest about where he lives.
Cabrera, who owns a design and drafting firm that deals in architectural design, drafting and permits, was appointed to the Planning Commission by the City Council in July 2019. His term is set to expire in 2023.
Planning Commissioners are tasked with making decisions and/or recommendations to the City Council on applications such as rezones, conditional use permits, building variances and tentative subdivision maps. The commission uses the city’s zoning ordinance and general plan to guide its discussions and allows for staff recommendations and public input to make individual and collective judgments. ....
