Initial property maintenance code approved

The Ames City Council revisited the property maintenance code in unanimously approving a draft of ordinances for first reading July 18 that include restrictions on outdoor yard waste storage, vegetation in the right-of-way and unsecured buildings.  During the workshop, the council voted against the city staff’s recommendation of a 10-foot sidewalk clearance and voted for.

The Ames City Council voted 5-0 to accept the Climate Action Plan (CAP), which is not a commitment to do everything in the plan, as the city prepares to bring implementation steps before the council.  Ames City Manager Steve Schainker said the council had the desire for certain climate goals and they now have to.

Flood mitigation: Ames City Council votes to allow eminent domain use

Ames Tribune The Ames City Council voted 5-1 to allow eminent domain use for a flood mitigation project  though the city will first pursue purchasing the land.  Since the Federal Emergency Management Agency granted $3.7 million to fund the project, the council is required to hold a public forum on potential eminent domain use. The project, which will mitigate flooding along Squaw Creek near the South Duff Avenue bridge, will require total acquisition of two properties and will impact seven other properties.  One business owner, Jim Howe of Howe Welding and his wife, Piper Wall, expressed their concerns with the project at Tuesday s City Council meeting.
