Opposition to Riverview office expansion mounts in Mesa

Not in Mesa.
Neighbors heatedly oppose a request by a developer for an office building and garage near Riverview that Mesa City Council is scheduled to vote on at its virtual meeting at 5:45 p.m. Monday, March 15.
The key word in the last sentence is “scheduled.”
The developer’s request was introduced at the March 1 council meeting. Though Council did not vote on the matter, several people who live near the 30-acre office park at Alma School Road and Bass Pro Drive vehemently demanded the elected officials reject the plan.
Shawna Boyle said the plan for a three-story office building and four-story parking garage not only would wreck views, it would also violate “a written agreement … from 2007 that promised residents all the buildings would not be any taller than two stories.” ....

Mesa anti-discrimination ordinance hotly debated

Some will be upset if the city excludes smaller businesses. The first draft included all businesses.
Later study sessions adjusted that, first up to businesses with 15 employees or more, then back down to include all but those with five or fewer employees.
Others are furious that the city is even considering the regulation.
David Land said he was outraged over language in the proposed ordinance that “Gender identity means the actual or perceived gender-related identity, expression, appearance, or mannerisms, or other gender-related characteristics of an individual, regardless of the individual’s designated sex at birth.”
An emotional Land stated the last part of that is wrong: “God does not make mistakes,” he said. ....

Mesa seeks to target thoughtless fireworks users

Even someone’s house burned down.
But even though the state law is consistently violated, enforcing it is a difficult problem unless cops catch someone setting off aerial fireworks, City Manager Chris Brady said.
“The only way they can enforce it is when they actually see someone lighting the fireworks,’’ Brady said. “I think people standing around in the street is not enough to enforce it.’’
Kevin Bush, a deputy Mesa fire chief and fire marshal, said fireworks sales are regulated at supermarkets and fireworks stands to ensure that only legal ones are sold.
“The biggest issue for all of us is that there really is nothing to control the influx of illegal fireworks coming into our state and our city of Mesa,’’ Bush said. ....
