City considers traffic light system


GATLINBURG — The city is looking to improve its traffic signalization and considered a proposal during budget discussions this week.
City manager Cindy Cameron Ogle presented a memo from Police Chief Randy Brackins about a traffic light signalization system.
The system would allow for traffic counting, synchronization system, and computerization of all signals on Parkway, River Road and Hwy. 321.
“Twelve lights will be computerized,” Ogle said.
The total cost would be $350,000.
That includes $262,000 for traffic camera detection; $45,000 for fiber optic connection; $275 for cellular connection; $27,925 for signal controllers with cabinets; $4,800 for programming and coordination data; and $10,000 for software and operating computer.
This system is separate from a traffic study the city has planned, but Ogle said the study will likely recommend such a system. ....

Gatlinburg uses record year to fund $15 million in projects


GATLINBURG — After a dismal economic performance due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City didn’t just rebound but exploded in tax revenue generated, and officials are proposing to use that money to fund a number of capital projects in the new fiscal year 2021-2022 budget.
During a presentation to the City Commission, City Manager Cindy Cameron Ogle said tax revenue streams at the end of FY 2021 were 80% or more above budget estimates. The City Commission is set to vote on the first of three readings of the budget at their regular meeting at 6 p.m. today in City Hall.
Ogle said she’s presented a lot of budgets over her tenure, but this is one of the best she’s ever been able to show commission. ....

Gatlinburg needs public support for dog park grant


GATLINBURG — The city recently submitted an application for a Tennessee Dog Park Dash grant and now needs the public’s help in moving to the next phase of the grant process.
“We are happy to say the city was selected on Friday, April 30, to advance to what is called the social engagement phase of the Tennessee Dog Park Dash grant program,” City Manager Cindy Cameron Ogle said.
“As part of the social engagement phase the city needs the support from the public during this portion of the grant process.”
Gatlinburg is one of 20 communities across the state which qualified for the Social Engagement Phase of the grant application process, which runs through May 31. ....

National Park, Gatlinburg target trash enforcement efforts on Spur


GATLINBURG — Great Smoky Mountains National Park Rangers and the Gatlinburg Police Department partnered for a targeted enforcement event on the northbound Spur on Sunday, March 28, and Monday, March 29.
The coordinated targeted enforcement was implemented to ensure that motorists transporting trash, construction debris, or other cargo was properly secured to prevent materials from littering scenic roadways.
“With increasing visitation trends and more use of park roads for business and recreation, we need everyone to do their part to keep our roads litter free,” said Superintendent Cassius Cash. “To protect our scenic values and wildlife, it is vital that we prevent trash from ever being discarded in a National Park.” ....
