And so with the determination and courage and perseverance, programming was designed by our panelists tonight so that we could tell the whole story of our 18th century community. Blending social history with public history to tell the africanamerican story had never been done before. And quite literally, they were making history. This is the first of three panelist discussions were going to have this year, and i would welcome you to come back on july 5th, where we will look at current programming that focuses on africanamerican stories. And also on october 18th, where we will be focusing on the future. And our panelists at that discussion will be helping us to think about how do we continue to tell this story . History through a wide variety of perspectives and lenses. If you are interested in the people, you can learn more about the people who live there and the people who work there. The people who built it and repaired it. If you are interested in looking at things like artifacts, objects, material culture, painting, fine arts, decorative arts, the white house has all of those things, as well. If youre into politics, policy, that is something that people think about. Even pop culture or political culture. Understanding the white house is a symbol for american democracy and how that has changed and evolved over time. It says a lot about who we are and the american identity. I think all these ways of studying the white house, it touches on all these Different Things. You may not get this in a traditional, American History textbook but if you look deeper there is an incredible history on the surface. War museum, is relevant today. Many of you are regulars to the events, history buffs who love to study the lessons of history. I would like to add a special welcome to some of you who are new to the preservationists who have joined us today in the audience. As we have over the decades in our existence, as the museum of the confederacy and the American Civil War center which combined to form the American Civil War museum, we have always thought that it was our responsibility to engage constructively with public issues arising from the subject of the civil war. Whether that subject be monuments, the confederate battle flag, or the discussion of slavery as the cause of the war. Our purpose today is to promote a constructive and civil consideration of civil war monuments.
