LifeCycle Malta Foundation Donates €25,000 to UM Research Trust (RIDT)

LifeCycle Malta Foundation Donates €25,000 to UM Research Trust (RIDT)

The LifeCycle Malta Foundation is donating a sum of €25,000 to the University of Malta’s Research, Innovation & Development Trust (RIDT) for its investigation into polycystic kidney disease (PKD)!

The foundation’s chairperson, Dr. Shirley Cefai, thanked Nestlé Malta for making this sponsorship possible, referring to it as a
‘team effort despite the challenging times’.

The research, ‘Genotype-Phenotype of Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney disease in Malta’, aims to provide a genetic diagnosis to local patients suffering with ADPKD. It is currently being conducted by UM’s Anatomy and Cell Biology Department, in collaboration with the Departments of Medicine and Pathology at Mater Dei Hospital. ....

No crib at European Parliament
I agree wholeheartedly with what Francis Vassallo had to say in his article ‘No crib at European Parliament’ (December 28).
Malta’s MEPs should not shy away and join Spanish MEP Isabel Benjumea in demanding a change of policy regarding a crib at the European Parliament in the Christmas period. “Because it offends others” is a nonsensical excuse.
May whoever is responsible remember that those who, as he said, could be offended, are the non-natives.
Alfred Gauci – Sliema
I refer to the letter ‘Pregnancy and the law’ (December 24) by Mark Formosa.
If “life begins at conception”, as some would have us believe, then it follows that whether there is a heartbeat or not, the early pregnancy is protected from the moment of fertilisation. ....

Pregnancy and the law
As a practising gynaecologist, I have been following the ongoing debate in this newspaper regarding pregnancy termination.
As I have stated in a previous contribution, one’s stand on this matter reflects one’s own personal moral and religious beliefs. It is a personal stand and one that cannot really be argued in the theatre of science.
However, the contribution ‘Giving women a choice’ by Christopher Barbara (December 19) requires a clarification.
Barbara quotes the law to state that the termination of a pregnancy is a criminal offence in Malta and proposes that the termination of an ectopic gestation must,  therefore, also be deemed to be illegal and thereby questions the validity of the law or that the age-old practice of performing a salpingectomy in the case of an ectopic  amounts to a criminal act. ....

Mario Grech, Charmaine Gauci among Republic Day honours recipients

Cardinal Mario Grech and Superintendent of Public Health Charmaine Gauci were among those awarded Republic Day honours by President George Vella on Sunday in a specially organised ceremony respecting social distancing guidelines.
The ceremony took place at the President s Palace in Valletta. Eleven members were awarded The National Order of Merit, and seven others the
Midalja ghall-Qadi tar-Repubblika.
Because of the pandemic, the President did not place the medal on the individuals but those awarded placed it on themselves once this was handed to them.

Justice for Daphne is Malta s primary challenge - President
