A Dangerous Master | Free Inquiry

On December 6, 1999, after a successful landing, a Global Hawk unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) unexpectedly accelerated its taxiing speed to 178 mph and, at a curve in the runway, veered off the paved surface. Its nose gear collapsed in the adjacent desert, causing $5.3 million in damage. At the time of the accident, the operators piloting the UAV from the safety of their control station had no idea why it had occurred. An Air Force investigation attributed the acceleration to software problems compounded by “a breakdown in supervision.” A spokesperson for Northrop Grumman, the UAV’s manufacturer, placed blame for the excessive speed totally upon the operators. There was certainly some delay in the operators’ recognition of the UAV’s unanticipated behavior. Even after they realized something was wrong, they did not understand which of its programmed subroutines the aircraft was following. The compensating instructions they did provide were either not received or not accomm ....

Variants spur WVU scientists to study, mitigate strain outbreaks

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia University scientists knew it was coming.
When health officials confirmed the first three cases of a COVID-19 variant in West Virginia late Friday, Feb. 19, they were not surprised. In fact, WVU researchers had, in recent weeks, already formed a partnership with colleagues at Marshall University and the Department of Health and Human Resources to identify SARS-CoV-2 variants.
Utilizing an automated system and whole genome sequencing, the team — led by Peter Stoilov, Peter Perrotta and Ryan Percifield at WVU and Jim Denvir and Don Primerano at Marshall — is set to analyze hundreds of samples per week from across the state. ....

LifeCycle Malta Foundation Donates €25,000 to UM Research Trust (RIDT)

The LifeCycle Malta Foundation is donating a sum of €25,000 to the University of Malta’s Research, Innovation & Development Trust (RIDT) for its investigation into polycystic kidney disease (PKD)!

The foundation’s chairperson, Dr. Shirley Cefai, thanked Nestlé Malta for making this sponsorship possible, referring to it as a
‘team effort despite the challenging times’.

The research, ‘Genotype-Phenotype of Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney disease in Malta’, aims to provide a genetic diagnosis to local patients suffering with ADPKD. It is currently being conducted by UM’s Anatomy and Cell Biology Department, in collaboration with the Departments of Medicine and Pathology at Mater Dei Hospital. ....
