can, as balanced as i can, i get to do something fundamentally creative and say this is what i think happened. we begin our look with author david berman and his book arizona s seven-term governor george hunt. if you re going to write a history for arizona and you want to tell it, you can t ignore george hunt because he was so much involved in everything that went on from 1890 to the 1930 s and the new deal. a lot of reforms and the right to the water from the colorado river. he was at the center of everything. george hunt was born in a place called huntsville, missouri, named after his grandfather. and he was in a part of missouri that was settled largely by the upper south. tennessee and north carolina. his family came from that area. and he was raised on a farm which was devastated terribly by the civil war and raised in poverty, really, and had a tough time subsistence farming. they had to live on what they grew. had little education. and more than willing to do with

i am going to talk mainly about california and the years following 1948. you think all the way doctors conquistadors. they were fascinated by the quest for gold. the history of their conquest, first with the aztecs and then of the incas, is of an unquenchable desires for purchase for precious gold and metals. when the first english settlers came to jamestown, they hoped to find the same kind of supplies of gold found by the spaniards. there was a bitter disappointment in not finding gold in what is now virginia. america s first gold rush took place to where we are now in georgia in 1829. this was the georgia goldrush in north georgia. 100 miles north to the town of don monica, you can see the old lumpkin county courthouse has been converted into a gold-mining museum. discovered,d was then people started pouring into the area in huge numbers because of the intoxicating possibility that gold would make them wealthy quickly. until then, this had been an area behind the settlem

artists dealing with social and plenty social and political content. a lot of these artists throughout history have recognized the artform s ability to bring about social change. later, we will make our way to the top of hayden butte and hear about the man credited 40 settlement, charles hayden. he was a community builder in a wider sense. thinking about what could he do to help the community get bigger and that is in a lot of ways why his figure has become bigger historically. we begin the hour at the asu library, where we will looking at items from two long serving senators, barry goldwater and carl hayden. the arizona collection here at the asu library preserves accessible the papers of 14 members of congress from arizona . the goldwater papers and the hayden papers are the two largest archival collections that document the works of the arizona congressional delegation. hayden is an interesting individual because his father was the first white settler of the city
