Lawyer endorsements were a conflict of interest

Just a couple of months ago, Chittenden State’s Attorney Sarah George was in a heated primary contest with Ted Kenney. During the campaign, Ms. George stated that “I have never sought and would never seek the endorsement of a police union. … I think that’s an apparent conflict with my job. I have a responsibility to hold law enforcement accountable. I have done that, arguably more than any other state s attorney.” Contemporaneously, candidate George received the endorsement of 50 Vermont attorneys. Since the Vermont House of Representatives passed its version of fiscal 2022 budget, there’s been concern raised by Gov. Phil Scott’s office and Republicans over the amount of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds envisioned as part of the spending plan.
The House proposed spending a large portion of that $1.3 billion in the FY 22 budget to free up dollars for other concerns in its version of the budget, which passed the House unanimously on March 26; Scott’s administration came forward with a plan to allocate $1 billion in ARPA funds on April 5. ....
