strength and it s taking aim at the carolinas, where people now are bracing for the worst. i m john berman in ft. myers, florida. the storm now barreling towards south carolina with 85-mile-per-hour winds. it is expected to make its third landfall in the coming hours near myrtle beach. after seeing the damage in florida, the governor of south carolina says, we know what s coming. so this storm might be the largest natural disaster in florida s history. the destruction here in ft. myers, i m standing in the middle of it, it is hard to comprehend. ft. myers beach, i had a chance to fly over it in a helicopter, much of it flattened. one official there describes the damage as, there s really nothing to come back to. at least 19 people have died from this storm. power is out this morning across the state. there have been hundreds of rescues. the coast guard has been out in force, airlifting people from flooded homes and neighborhoods. sanibel island hit very hard. the storm ....

of the florida coast of that this is sanibel island, an island decimated by hurricane ian. right now there s no way to get help in to sanibel. the only bridge that connected the island to the mainland, it s a long causeway, it s caved in. so there s no way to get on or off the island unless you travel by boat. and that s been incredibly difficult for anyone to do. and that loss right now spans the florida coast. i ll show you cape coral. our bill weir was here today. this is a picture he took. you can see home after home totally destroyed and flooded. the ones that are still standing, you can see siding ripped off. at one point ian s winds were 155 miles an hour. we re going to have much more from bill weir in a moment. not far from where he took those images, ft. myers beach, striking images of what is left. not much. the beach community 48 hours ago looked like that. now, take a look at this. estero boulevard, 24 hours later. a restaurant called the whale surrounded b ....

Underwater. cnn chief climate correspondent bill weir was there as the full extent of the storm s destruction was coming to light. watch this. we know the coast guard has been doing some airlifts off of rooftops of people they had rescued this morning, i think a couple of dozen. and we ve been seeing the big choppers with the back door open with the winch, ready to go. but this is just unbelievable. the amount of damage in this one neighborhood. we re between the river and san carlos bay and ian just raked this thing. i ve been talking to the locals who have been telling me that the water came up so fast, chin high. a lot of retirees, elderly folks, families in here, working class, some manufactured housing here, more expensive condos near the river. so you ve got a mix here, a ....

Water was coming into the house, we have to go. and at that time it was raining hard. and so i picked him up, through him on high shoulder. and when i stepped off my porch, my front porch, the water was shin hig chin high. up to my chin. and some of father famiher fami blew off and they came to my house. and then my roof blew off, so we had to walk into that to my neighbor s house. and how far away was that? at least five minute walk. but it felt like much more? especially in the water, it felt longer than that. yeah. yeah, especially with the deep water, it felt a lot longer than ....
