Daniel Prude death: Mayor, others lied about handling of case

A six-month fact-finding investigation into the city s handling of the Daniel Prude case ultimately blames Mayor Lovely Warren for keeping the matter under wraps and concludes she then misled the public about what she knew, and when. 
Few new details emerged in the 84-page final report. But special investigator Andrew Celli drew conclusions on who and what is to be believed.
He also concluded that former Police Chief La Ron Singletary downplayed, omitted details and misdirected city officials and the public; that city Corporation Counsel Tim Curtin similarly misled officials and the public about material information; and he widely faulted the administration for its handling of the case. ....

An independent investigation into the city of Rochester s response to the death of Daniel Prude nearly one year ago determined that officials suppressed information and lied.
Prude, 41, was restrained by Rochester police officers in March 2020 during a mental health emergency. His death a week later, of complications from asphyxia after he was taken off life support, was ruled a homicide by the the Monroe County medical examiner.
The incident became widely known after his family released body-worn camera footage of the arrest in September that showed Prude appearing to go unconscious while he is being pinned to the ground, sparking protests and calls for reform. Former Rochester Police Chief La Ron Singletary was fired amid criticism over the handling of Prude s death, and the seven officers invol ....

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)  A report says city officials suppressed information about the arrest and death of Daniel Prude.
Friday, we, as many of you did, went through the report of the city council s special investigation. 
It says the former police chief de-emphasized the main reason why Daniel Prude died. 
It says the mayor made an untrue statement to the public in September.

And it says the city s lawyer used a false excuse to try to keep the police video of Prude s arrest private.
In a statement attached to the report, attorney Andrew Celli, the lawyer hired to run the investigation asked did officials of city government suppress information about the arrest and death of Daniel Prude between March and September? The straightforward answer is yes. ....

In the final analysis, the decision not to publicly disclose these facts rested with Mayor Warren, as the elected Mayor of the City of Rochester. But Mayor Warren alone is not responsible for the suppression of the circumstances of the Prude Arrest and Mr. Prude s death, an independent report concluded.
