Lockdown: Chaos prevails on Chennai roads as cops begin to check vehicle pass | Chennai News

CHENNAI: Vehicles piled up at many major junctions in Chennai on Tuesday morning as police stepped up measures to prevent unnecessary movement of people in view of the lockdown. This led to chaos in places like Spencer Plaza junction, Thiruvanmiyur junction, Teynampet, Nandanam signal and Pattalam junction.
On Monday, Chennai city police commissioner Shankar Jiwal gave instructions to scrutinise motorists on the roads after 10am.
On Tuesday morning, cops blocked arterial roads with barricades and allowed only vehicles with valid travel passes to proceed.
Many vehicle riders took ‘U’ turns and detours to reach their destinations. Several road users complained that cops were not following any protocol. ....

CHENNAI: The city city police on Friday intensified the enforcement of the lockdown. Over 100 checkposts are set up across the city and motorists were stopped to check their purpose of travel. Vehicles of those found travelling for non-essential purposes are being seized.  ....

As Covid-19 cases crossed 27,000 a day and an overstretched healthcare sector struggled to handle the growing number of patients, the state government on Saturday announced a complete lockdown across Tamil Nadu from 4am on May 10 to 4am on May 24. Chief minister M K Stalin said that more than 23 districts in TN had reported a positivity rate of more than10%. At least15 out of every100 people undergoing Covid-19 tests were found to be infected, state health department said on Saturday when TN added 27,397 new cases. The 241 deaths – highest so far – the state reported on Saturday pushed the toll tally beyond 15,000 and the cumulative case tally breached 13 lakh. CHENNAI: The Chennai police have warned residents not to step out during Sunday s full lockdown until 4 am on Monday morning.
While grocery stores will be open from 5 am to 1 pm, hotels will be allowed to deliver parcels alone with specific timings (6 am to 10 am; 12 noon to 3 pm; 6 pm to 9 pm).
