Large crowd gathers Sunday for Memorial Day service in Gretna


GRETNA, Va. — A passing shower stopped just in time for the 2021 Memorial Day service offered by Gretna American Legion Post 232 on Sunday afternoon at the graveyard behind Trinity Episcopal Church in Gretna.
Post 232 Commander A. W. Younger welcomed the sizable crowd that turned out for this annual service that was not held for the first time last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This day is sacred with the almost invisible presence of those who have gone before us. We honor the memory of those who gave their lives in the service of our country and of those others who dropped their burdens by the wayside of life, and are gone to their eternal rest,” he said. “May this day of service today deepen our reverence of our departed friends and comrades. Let us renew our pledge of loyalty to our country and its flag. Let us resolve by word and deed to emphasize the privilege and duty of patriotism.” ....

Heritage Academy students visit Yates Tavern in Gretna


GRETNA, Va. — Heritage Academy held their biannual Colonial Day celebration on Friday, where third and fourth grade students learn about what it was like in colonial times. This year, the twenty students got to step into the past and visit Yates Tavern in Gretna for a living example of what it was like. 
Dressed in period clothing, Karen Brown and Tate Leftwich’s students stepped off their bus and began a tour of the home at the front door. Members of the Pittsylvania Historical Society, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames guided the students through the home, telling them about how the tavern was like a hotel, offering lodging and food to travelers. ....
